Endotoxemia is a condition characterised by the presence of endotoxins in the blood. If endotoxemia is the result of gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria, shock may also occur.
Endotoxins are non-protein fragments of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria. They must be absorbed into the circulation to produce disease and systemic effects. Endotoxin may be absorbed into the systemic circulation in a number of different ways: most commonly the body’s normal defence mechanisms are disrupted or bypassed, or the normal clearance mechanisms overwhelmed.
Clinical signs of Endotoxemia in horses include;
- Fever
- Arterial hypoxaemia
- Signs of abdominal pain
- Severe infections
- Inflammation
- Dehydration
- Cardiovascular collapse
- Organ failure
Can Equissage help with Endotoxemia in Horses?
Yes it can (after initial treatment) but each case should be assessed individually as this can be a fatal condition and its use should be strictly on the agreement of the treating vet.
You should not use Equissage on any horse that presents a fever or fever-like symptoms and/or organ failure.
In the case of Endotoxemia, there are so many factors to take into consideration that when and how to apply Equissage will depend entirely on the severity of a case, what has been the cause (e.g. through colic, laminitis) and the necessary veterinary treatment.
However, Equissage is always beneficial when part of the aftercare following surgery, infections, and inflammation.

Application
In such situations it is advised that an owner contacts an Equissage advisor to discuss the best application for the horse. But as a generalisation use of the Pad on a lower setting (No.2-No.4) is recommended.
